Making Your Own Veg Patch and Growing Your Own Vegetables

Making Your Own veg Patch and Growing Your Own Vegetables
By Paul Godfrey

People have been growing their own vegetables for hundreds of years. For most of the nineteen hundreds it would have been hard to imagine a household garden without a vegetable patch. After a brief decline in the popularity of this pastime in the nineteen nineties and early two thousands, people once again are growing more and more of their own fresh, organic vegetables.

Growing vegetables at home is an incredibly rewarding pastime, no matter how big or small your garden is you will have space to grow some if not nearly all of your on veg; even if you only have access to a shared patio or a window box you can grow herbs and vegetables such as tomatoes and runner beans.

There are many factors you will to take into consideration when making a vegetable garden. Location is critical as vegetables need plenty of sunlight, lots of water and some shelter from the elements.

Soil plays an integral part in the success of every vegetable garden and will need to be tested to make sure it is not to acidic or alkaline before anything can be planted, care must also be taken to ensure that it has enough nutrients to supply a healthy crop of fresh vegetables.

Many people opt for raised vegetable beds rather than working directly at ground level as this gives them the opportunity to import their on soil rather than working with what nature has provided. Another advantage of the raised vegetable bed is that it allows the gardener to choose what height they would like to work at therefore eliminating the back problems often associated with growing vegetables.

Planning is essential! When first making a vegetable garden it is easy to get carried away and just plant all kinds of vegetables with no real thought given to when they are going to be ready for harvesting and who is going to eat them all. With a little research and forward planning it is possible to have a sustainable supple of fresh herbs and vegetables nearly all year round.
